Triads are not actually criminal organisations.
The name derives from the unity of Heaven, Earth and Man, which makes up the Tian Di Hui. Note that the "huI" word has a "ren zi tou". Triad=made up of 3.
Tian Di Hui=forerunner of what we now call Hong Men. All the what tong what gao what siao ALL can be traced to this.
In the past the Triad's main purpose was to overthrow the Qing dynasty. But after that they lost purpose in their organisations, and instead turned to illegal means to keep on surviving, which i guess has spread all around.
I think the association in the website is more of a men's club kinda thingy, like the freemasons? Whereby they are respectable leaders of their own community but still hold true to the ideals of loyalty and brotherhood held so dearly by their forerunners.
What makes them different is the various rituals they use to induct new "brothers" into the fraternity, ie "kai xiang tang", and punishments meted to unloyal traitors, ie "san dao liu yan" (lit. 3 blades, six eyes, a painful punishment indeed.) -
