Howeva, I feel that they require more specialised teachers and attention, which normal schools can't provide them with... their behaviour in class's quite disturbing to the other students too...the teachers gotta teach the whole of 40 students in a class and take care of those autistic ones who just can't keep still...it makes the job of teachers very stressful and taxing too..
Should the government build more special schools to cater to the needs of these children? -

moreover how the child behaves in class depends on the degree of the autism and its best that it can be cured as young as possible.

How small do you think that group is? it's like one in every EM3/Lower Pri class in some schools... mostly neighbourhood schools...I've known a couple of people from the teaching profession...one Autistic student can give them hell alot of trouble!!! I dun think jus by throwing a stone into a basket of eggs and you can turn that into egg. Now we have very good school for the autistic kids as well.. I guess it's better they start learning to mix around there.. Cuz we can't imagine their fear in a bunch of normal kids. But sadly, some parents can't think for nuts, they just care about their 'faces' only.. so die die put their children in normal school and cause even bigger trouble for the kids, themselves, and others. I'm not saying autistic children are troublesome, everyone has problems here and there too, so it's better not to worsen them. -

Unfortunately special needs education (e.g. autism) is very expensive here in Singapore, most parents cannot afford. There is a school catering to autistic kids and offering the complete mainstream primary school syllabus. The catch? Fees are $500 per month!!

if this is enforced, than it is up to the gahman to provide those facilities that can accomodate those who cannnot afford it. would they?
they rather strongly recommend specialized school, provide financial assistence for lower income (maybe some from 3rd party organizations?) and let parents make the final call.
the problem would be how to educate parents that specialized schools are okay - and their children are not branded as outcast or burden to society which we often accidentally seems to portray. and get those lower income or knowledgable people to know there are financial assistence abound.. i heard of something like dat before but i have no ideas after that. its dat bad.

Since the government can spend loads on almost redundent MRT lines...building Casinos... etc.. I don't see why can't spend a little more on Social welfare....
It's cheap studyin in a "normal" primary school coz it's subsidised by the government.. so if these "schools for the autistic" are government aided.. it wouldn't be so expensive anymore... but of course.. it'll still be more costly than the normal schools.
These autistic kids can't get anything outta the normal education Primary schools give here....
Just imagine.. when the teacher's teaching...and when all the other kids are all at their seats listening attentively... this autistic kid starts jumping and running around like nobody's business....screams and shouts.. take other people's stuffs...poking other students with pencils.. blah blah etc...
How much can a teacher do about such a situation.... and also, i bet that kid learnt nothing from running and fooling around... why not give him proper professional education before letting him mix with the others... -
my mum made a mistake and sent me to normal primary school...
i should have been sent to those school for autistic children. i only found out the truth recently... -
the no. is not really that small. you can combine levels, like p1+p2 together

I guess more will be done if any of the minister's or MP's kids are diagnosed with autism or dyslexia next time. Nothing like being on the receiving end to speed up policy change and implementation!

I have read in the newspaper TODAY forum(this was months ago), a mother complained that her son was not allowed to join a kindergarden if i am not wrong for fear that other parent's children pick up autistic children's bad behaviour, the parents complained and the son was not allowed to join the school.
I think this is nonsense, there used to be autistic kids in my secondary school last time.From what i see, it is the normal kids who encourage bad behaviour to the autistic kids. -

Well, It's hard to see this issue as whole, to me it all depends on the indivdual kids. Different conditions will have a different effects. Some kids may require lots of attention from many facets. Though they may see themselves in their own worlds, let not foget they are human beings filled with feeling, they can feel who are the ones who come & goes & who are the ones who showered their time & concern to them.
An Autistic child may not always be autistive, we should not see them so pessimistic. They learn as they grow. Study in a special school that cater to the needs of the Autistic children is just like everyone living in their own paradigm, unable conmensurate with each other, however on the other side, there's a higher chance if they are to join normal children in the school, a higher chances of their recovery. -
Teachers just throw them some stuffs to keep them busy... like coloring books and so on... and continue teaching their normal students... no one tells them what and how to behave.. i wonder how they learn?
I'm not lookin down on these autistic children..frankly i feel very sorry for them, no one wants to be born in that state... however, i believe that children with such disability , at least, should be given some special attention and education before joining the real world, if not, it'll be too late to cultivate their mentality when they're older, and if they continue behaving this way.. I'm afriad the society may not be accept them, the outside world's cruel.
These children aren't like normal kids who can socialise themselves...and we shouldn't be there hoping a miracle will happen (by letting them mixing with the other kids) and not doing anything at all. How can a teacher handle 40 kids ( little monkeys they call) and an autistic kid at the same time, while trying to teach??
A friend of mine visited an Autistic school for a job interview a couple of months ago. She told me their classes consists of less than 10 kids each, one teacher and one teacher assistant. These teachers have to undergo specialised training to handle these kids. Look, you have 2 specialists looking after 5 children there... and in a normal school, it's just a teacher looking after 40 students, how much attention do you think she/he can provide the autistic kid? If autistic kids do not need that much attention, why do Autistic schools plan their classes so small, with 2 teachers? -

no offence intended...but in regards to tis i find tat our Gov is kinda evading on tis issue... i mean if u have the things for the education systems planned out for the next 10 years then surely u should have thought and even perhaps put into motions the plans to help tis poor souls...but so far nothing from them... -
