BEIJING: Bollywood blockbuster Lagaan has been premiered in China's gleaming eastern metropolis Shanghai generating considerable public interest and rave reviews.
The launch in Shanghai on Friday followed the November 20 premiere in the Chinese capital, Beijing.
Lagaan is the first Indian movie to be released in China nation-wide on a revenue-sharing basis.
The release of Lagaan, which has been dubbed into Chinese language, is the result of painstaking efforts by Columbia Tristar Film Distributors International (CTFDI) and the China Film Group.
Some 1,200 Chinese people who thronged the Shanghai film centre's multiplex theatre well ahead of the first show at 1930 hrs, were extremely happy at seeing a famous Indian movie at the local theatre, Consul General of India in Shanghai, Sujan R Chinoy said.
Chinoy, who also opened a poster exhibition of Lagaan recalled that Chinese people always had a special liking for Indian films and supported India's struggle for independence, justice and equality.
He hoped that Lagaan, shot in the colonial background, would attract Chinese audience and lead to more releases of Indian films in China, besides popularising cricket.
Joe Zhang, an official from CTFDI said Lagaan's release gave them a chance to reintroduce Indian culture to the Chinese people and rekindle their memories when Raj Kapoor's "Awara" was one of the most popular names to all Chines -
