Cufflinks - what does it say for a man?

Anybody has any idea why should guys wear cufflinks?
What qualities do they suggest a man have? Gay?
I also notice people in the finance and banking sector tend to wear them. Probably gordon Gekko (GG) inspired.
Comments? Where can one get good cufflinks for less than 100$ per pair?

you can get them at any shopping centre type shop like Seiyu or something...
and it gives an impression of professionalism...

In my industry (engineering), even big shots (including Japs, angmohs, etc.) wear t-shirts, jeans and overalls. Save me precious weekend time, which otherwise would've been used for ironing clothes. -
I suppose guys who have to wear shirt and tie to work aa slavery everyday will get a little bored with the clothes after a while.
Guess the shiny cufflinks could brighten things up subtly. Better that wearing a bright shirt that scares the daylights out of everybody.
Gekko still does look good with cufflinks even after...18 years?! Wallsteet was like 1987 -
you dress well to respect yourself and others by looking good, not show off. ironing very fast what, with the steaming thing you dont even have to iron, just hang up ur clothes and run the steam blowing thing up and run it'll straighten

I prefer Silk Knot instead of Cuff link... I find that most of the cuff link are too loud for my taste. Anyway, it is a way of differentiating oneself and to feel good.
I do not really agreed with the observation by gentlerock... only apply to SGP. Japanese will goto the construction site in Suits and change into the work clothings. So it very unlikely that you can find a person that is dressed in the construction working cloth in the subway/trains. -
It'a a silly mentality to say that engineers must always dress down to show "ruggedism".

They're just accessories to personalise the usual shirt-tie-pants look.
I like 'em! There're some really nice ones around and they add something interesting to a guy's outfit.
