“Will to Blaze” – a quote from our school anthem and the motto of the Temasek Academy, Temasek Junior College’s premier 4-year Integrated Programme. Starting next year, 100 students from various secondary schools will leave their current schools for four years of intense, challenging and exciting college life, bypassing the GCE ‘O’ level and cumulating in the GCE ‘A’ level. Designed to give students a strong foundation in Science and Mathematics, Temasek Academy is balanced with a broad-based humanities and aesthetics curriculum that develops intercultural awareness, team work and communication skills. It aims to nurture thinkers, leaders and trailblazers of tomorrow and through the emphasis in four major areas: leadership, academics, research, and extended learning.
The newly built centres: Centre for Leadership Development, Centre for Academics, Centre for Extended Learning and the Temasek Research Centre (TRC) serve to mould the students and stretch them to their limits, broadening their horizons through new learning methods such as elective and enrichment modules, milestone seminars, hands-on research and experiential fieldwork and projects. Through this, leadership traits, communication skills and the ability to think critically and creatively can be nurtured effectively in students.
In the spirit of “Teach Less, Learn More”, students of Temasek Academy learn to apply academic concepts in the real world. Class 06/04 experienced a taste of how lessons would be conducted in the Academy during the Temasek Academy Open House when the class was asked to perform a mock economics class for the Open House. The students were divided into groups and assigned to sell certain products after which they write reports and reflect on their work, during which they realised that they used economic concepts such as colluding and bartering with other groups to maximise profits and succeed in selling all their products. Through such projects and assignments, students think more critically and gain a better understanding of the subject while having fun at the same time, which is what the Academy is all about: Hands on learning while having a great time.
The Temasek Academy is not for those with a weak will and low resilience. Only those with passion, purpose and drive will be accepted by the Academy for they are the ones with the will to fuel TemasekÂ’s blaze.
A first-ever Bio-IT Portal called PRIMER- http://primer.tjc.edu.sg - is set to spawn a vibrant virtual local community of students, teachers and scientists who will get to interact, collaborate, share and build resources in bioinformatics and molecular biology online.
Acting Minister for Education, Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam launched the web-based portal, "PRIMER" today in conjunction with the opening of the 27th Singapore Youth Science Festival (SYSF) at Temasek Junior College. SYSF is an annual event co-organised by the Singapore Science Centre, Science Teachers' Association of Singapore and Shell.
PRIMER is jointly developed by Temasek Junior College, A*STAR's Bioinformatics Institute and Yang Le, a TJC alumnus, currently a first year student at NUS. It aims to help build up student-created bio-IT resources, promote interaction across levels (secondary to tertiary levels) and facilitate a network for sharing a common pool of knowledge in bioinformatics.
Students will also get access to bio-computing tools and learn how to use them to process, interpret and understand biomedical research data such as in three-dimensional protein modeling and analysing of protein structure.
All heads of science departments in Singapore schools will be offered accounts for use by their students and teachers. Each participating student or researcher will be given a designated server space. Being a web-based set up, the portal can be accessed anywhere. Participating students or researchers working on a collaborative project can make deposits into the accounts in the form of new computer programmes, research findings, original videos or animation sequences that enhance understanding of specific concepts in biomedical sciences. All deposits are channeled to a central repository from which account holders can make withdrawals.Temasek Academy Advisory Panel Members
