self drive in japan - hokkaido holiday?

I have heard of self drive holiday in australia, NZ, USA etc but never heard of self drive in Japan!
Car comes with GPS so direction is not really a issue. You just key in the tel code/number of the shop you want to go and GPS will show you there!
Most road sign have english, another benefits for foreigners.

I saw this jap advert for a pioneer car gps system, the driver drove his 180sx thru a supermarket.

skylines are plentiful in Japan. in my recent trip there, i did not spot any Evo or even a Celica but saw quite a number of skylines. one of the oddest sight was actually spotting a skyline bearing HUB CAPS instead of rims.Originally posted by pqr:i am getting a more rare car in singapore :- skyline

one of the reasons why self-drive is not popular in Japan is that toll fares kill. I suggest you check out how many toll gates you have to pass during your whole trip in Hokkaido. -

The area now is being promoted for self driving and will be in most of the country side. so i guess the toll fare should not be as bad but thanks for ur advise, i will have a check. -
Even the countryside has quite a number of tolls, so get some money ready, it's going to get expensive. I've just been there last december, goin' through the whole of southern Hokkaido. Btw, if i'm not wrong, the toll rate for cars is SGD7.00 for passing through the toll. It's not cheap.
