From what I learnt in modern Chinese history, Empress Dowager Cixi had a favourite eunuch Li Lianying. This guy grew swollen headed from carrying the Empress' balls. One day, he became so cocky that he staged a revolt against her. Cixi was furious that her pet dared to go against her and cracked down on Li's faction. Of course, the punishment was death, and Li was beheaded for his crime.

actually i also saw the "zhou xiang gong he".... my fav character was Lord Li, Li Hongzhang. I remember even the Jap PM also respected Li Hongzhang. Sumtimes, you cant give people power too much, because of such people, they lead to the decline of the organisation or government they hold.

Cannot really say she caused the downfall also... cos before she held power, china was already very weak. she was just trying to prolong china life..
she declared war becos the Ba Guo Lian Jun (8 united countries - consist of UK, Italy, etc) keep asking favours from china... they wanted lands.. money..=
At the very last, they wanted to spread their religion christianty into china...
This made Cixi very furious... cos, in her mind, she was thinking that, the ang mo even want to change their culture! So, she declared war...
But, they sent the "Yi He Tuan" (Boxer)... how to win? Those ang mo used rifles... the chinese Yi He Tuan still use knifes and swords!!!
In the end, china lost miserably, even Ci Xi got to run away from capital to hide..

history is the most boring subject for me in sec sch....esp when one can go on abt an event tat happens hundreds of years ago.

Today Li's tombstone could be found at the Eunuch Cemetery of En-ji Temple in the outskirts of Beijing. The tomb used to be very elaborate but was defiled by grave-robbers more than 30 years ago. From the date of death stated on the tombstone, Li died later than the Empress Dowager. -
