by Nyonya KwaySingaporeans are demanding that the upcoming presidential elections be conducted in the style of ‘Singapore Idol’.
“Fair, what,” said Ms. Apathi d/o Elekshanmugam. “Everywhere we kena see the President’s photo, like some idol like that, so why not vote him in idol-style also?”
“I also say!” said Mr. Chee Tow Peow, a voter. “Nowsaday be President got all sorts of criteria, must be financial espert, lah, must be CEO of some rich company, lah. And all decided by some panel. Singapore Idol also got criteria, also got judging panel, so adapt-adapt a bit, lah!”
Singapore’s numerous bloggers are already clogging bandwidth with suggestions for how an ‘Idol’-style presidential election might happen:
• Candidates must compete in various categories such as kissing babies, opening CCs, and asking the Gahmen for data on reserves without actually expecting them to hand any info over, at least not without a lot of footdragging or a fight.
• The panel of judges will include NMP Eunice Olsen (the ‘nice’ one), Minister of Education Tarzan Shanmugaratnam (the minority one) and Minister Dr. Ng Eng Cock (the nasty one)
• No need to go to polling stations, just SMS in your vote since our phone lines are all probably tapped anyway.
“I think ‘President Idol’ is a really appropriate idea,” said Mr. Quah Tee Vee. “Like “Singapore Idol’, it’s a musical contest, except with everyone competing to sing the Gahmen’s tune. Some more, our president is very ‘idle’, mah!”
However, MediaCock believes that a ‘President Idol’ is unlikely to happen. Said MediaCock spokesman Monopo Lee, “It’ll be too short a series, because history has shown there will be at most two contestants, and it’s not really in doubt who is expected to win.”
In related news, bookies are taking bets whether the upcoming elected presidency will be an elected elected presidency, or like the last time, an unelected elected presidency.
