it is the simplified version of the QWERTY keyboard..

u can dl a program to play with DVORAK
it will change ur current keys to DVORAK arrangement

it's got to do with the Old typewriter. those with mechanical arms that snap themselves to the paper.
in short, the layout of QWERTY keyboard is to seperate the common keys AEIOU, RSTLN so that their arms will not be entangled if the typist is a fast, or touch-typist..........sooooo......when they evolved to computer keyboard, the layout remined because people were already trained that way.
Therefore, if Bill Gates come out with a ABCDE layout, it will still work. Just need 5-10 years to become the default layout. -

in 1870s, typists were typing so fast that they were able to jam the keys which flew up to hit the typewriter ribbon. In the late 1870's: the "improved" Qwerty layout was designed to slow down typing. it remained unchanged some 130+ years later till today. -
the other keyboard FI mentioned supposedly puts the most common letters in the middle row, to speed up typing, opposite of the QWERTY keyboard
