ah.. this reminds me..tudung is a part of the traditional costume but not all malay females can wear that... they can only wear it after they've visited this place.. er.. i dunno how to spell wor...Originally posted by shinta:no idea...

Ok... didn't know this thread existed until shinta told me about it... time to flesh out as much as I can about what I know about the traditional costumes of the Malays. Yes, I am Malay.
Both sexes wear what is known as the baju kurung. For females, it consists of a loose fitting blouse with long skirt, and a tudung may or may not be included as part of the costume. About what shinta said about the tudung can only be worn after visiting some place or something.... I don't think I've heard of anything like that before. Just hope I'm not that ignorant of my own culture.
Anyway, for males it's a loose-fitting shirt with similar pants. A special kind of sarong, known as the 'kain samping', may be tied around the waist, and headgear known as the 'songkok' is worn. The songkok is generally black or navy blue, though it can also be white.
Bit of trivia: from what I've read, the baju kurung is actually adapted from costumes worn by the Chinese... I guess the adventures of Admiral Cheng Ho (a Chinese Muslim) played a part in the adoption of the baju kurung.
Yes, there is a special kind of small turban (known as the 'serban'), but you don't see many of those around and is generally worn by religious figures.
Females have the choice of another costume: the baju kebaya. In contrast to the generally monochromatic baju kurung, the kebaya fabric is generally far more intricate in design. I don't think I have to elaborate too much on this.... SIA girls wear kebayas on duty.
