  Some very cute & nice things (etc : wine cups, beautiful lamps, a cheap Hi-Fi system so they put in their room)

  I would say it depends on your budget and how close if your friend.
  
  A friend used to give me a bottle of red wine with 2 wine glasses.
  he put them in a small basket and wrapped it up with transparent wrapper.
  Simple and nice. The wine glasses can find in IKEA or Spotlight. Quite cheap.
  
  Otherwise, most guys above are right. appliances.
  Why not ask them what do they like? It'll be terrible is they get three irons or 2 vacumn cleaners. Probably end up in ebay waiting for buyers.
  
  How about a dining set (plates, cutlery, etc).
  Now GSS, should be able to get good bargain.
