  Just buy external casing and buy normal HDD can liao. For 3.5" I think it is $50 only for the casing. Then just fit in any HDD you want. If you want it smaller, consider 2.5" casing (Laptop HDD size). Though, it is usually smaller in capacity and more expensive too. So, depends you want the use the external HDD as portable disk (2.5") or as additional storage loh (3.5").

  but internals are less resistant to shock. not suggestible if you intend to use it for travelling. i find the box is more suitable if you need alot of storage and the 2 HDD slots are not enuff for you. you're then able to switch and swap HDD. less hassle then burning dvds.
  
  although it's really questionable what you need so much space for, when even 500gb (250gb x2) is not enough

  Depends on how you handle lah. I have been using external HDD for my laptop for more than a year now carrying it with me everywhere I go together with my laptop. No DVD burner and also company give only 40GB HDD. So, have to expand myself loh. So far, very satisfied with this setup I made loh.
  
  At home, I rather buy DVD burner + bigger internal HDD loh. No need external HDD at home.

  If I remember correctly, they sell external 40 GB HDDs at $180....
