Why called MRT / LRT?

What are the differences between MRT and LRT?
At what point fo time, we call MRT? LRT? -

in chicaog, it's called LRT only although it connects to the entire chicago area. -

MRT stands Mass Rapid Transit
in HK MTR stands for Mass Transit Railway.
LRT stands for Light Rail Transit
The technology is different, but i think the company can call it watever they like, rite? -

The LRT system in KL seems to cover a longer distance than any one of our MRT lines. It seems more like a mass transit rail system to me.

6 carriages is quite short, HK MTRs are much longer yet more crowded, cos population in HK dense as hell.... -
One of the lines uses only 2 carriages per train, even though the distance from one terminus to the other seems longer than any of our MRT lines. I've taken this line many times, and sometimes, I had to wait for the next train because it was too full. Peak hour frequencies can be down to 3 minutes per train.
