Most of Sheng Siong products are brought in directly from M'sia. That's why they are slightly cheaper. They also employ mostly M'sians and that's why their overheads are slightly lower then others. Yes, the prices can sometimes vary a little.
In terms of managing the stores, of course NTUC, Cold Storage, Carrefou, Shop & Save, Giant are more systematic. If you don't mind a little unorderly, Sheng Siong is cheaper. (Whispering... do check the expiry date of Sheng Siong products...

for me:
i buy ready made products like canned drinks, yoghurt, toiletries etc at sheng shiong or giant... cheap!
but for fresh vege, meat, etc i choose cold storage/carrefour. fresher, price sama sama also mah... -

Vegetables: so much cheaper and FRESHER (yes, contrary to what you all say)

If they complete with them, NTUC in for trouble.. That's why Bishan has 3 NTUC..
Like this, sekali 1 day, they resort to use our tax payers $$ to support NTUC for overstretching... Anyway, their items are the most ex now -
Seng Song - Cheap toiletries and basic foodstuffs....actually cheap everything!
Fair Price - Reasonable variety plus additional discount if you are a member.
Cold Storage - Comparable to FP (why is everyone calling it NTUC? that's the damn union, not the name of the supermarket!)
Carrefour - Mega-variety but sometimes pricy.
Giant - Competive prices crossed with larger variety.
Shop and Save - SO-SO only.
No preference. Depends on needs. -

I don't mind if its fair trade and its a businessman making money through volume sales. But for the NTUC, its not really a 'businessman' who is creaming us all this time (that leaves a very bad taste in my mouth!) and yet adverts keep telling us they are the best. And then there's also Mustafa too. Electronics is cheap there if you don't mind the place. In fact the jewellery and watches, sports stuff and almost everything is equally good. Just that the placement of things is a bit more complicated. Food stuff... you watch it cause they are more customed to the india/muslim taste. (I bought maggie mee that was suppose to be headed to some arabic country - taste like mutton flavour is added to the noodles..)
For me I support SS. I find SS orderly enough, cheap and convenient for me.... I'm there to get my groceries, not there to window shop and enjoy the environment. I buy 1 week's supply at one go in 30 minutes so I know where is everything and there's a system of placement I udnerstand. That's good enough for me. My total bills are high so this is my way of cutting my bills down.... little by little. BTW, its cheaper to buy in SS than in JB. This is power to me.
