  Mark Knopfler has his style but so are others. Steve Vai, Micheal Schenker and so many other rock guitarist to mention. However overall i feel the music of Dire Straits does not fall into the rock category based on my definition.
  
  To you it maybe but to others it may not. Some definition of rock and metal is needed to differentiate here
