Which country?? Dun tell me the western countries pls as they r ang moh. None of the South East Asia countries treat English as their first langauge only Singapore. I can't speak hokkien/cantonese at all but i converse fluently in both english and mandarin.. even then i don't look down on hokkien-only people or people speaks hokkien mostly... in fact i sometimes wish i can speak hokkien fluently.. so that at least can talk with them comfortably
...but I have to agree one thing.. that is our cantonese/hokkien/teochew are the "impure" versions, that is why you get the impression that hokkien is "low class" -
maybe people who talk in dialect are usually in a more casual and informal way. like with friends/ colleagues / family / relatives / hawkers / the public.. english is used formally, thats why, it may sound more high class and proper..

and actually i for one am not happy that melayu is the national language. personally i'm not inclined towards historical meanings, so i feel that the national language should reflect either the language most used/understood(unifying language?) or the langauge of the majority. this would make for english or chinese though i would tend towards english since its mroe common and neutral. -
My grandparents came from Indonesia, but our family speak Cantonese as a spoken dialect at home in Singapore. It is not the language that a person uses; it is what he says. Many common folks are Hokkien and some of them can speak Hokkien beautifully. No big deal. Unfortunately, many non-Hokkien seem to pick up only Hokkien swear words which thus give rise to the impression that Hokkien-speakers are low class.

It's not the point if you liking fishball noodles or not... what I'm trying to say was, why limit yourself in this particular social circle which you consider "high class"...
It's really important to be versatile... possessing the ability to converse with someone from US using proper english, someone from China using proper mandarin and the kopitiam uncle using dialects... It will help you bend into all walks of life and not becoming like one of those stuck-up and self perceived "high class" fellows who says "sorry I can't speak mandarin" when a chinese national asked for directions...
btw, what's wrong with going to a hawker centre... I grew up eating hawker food, and I don't think that just because of our increased standards of living, we are to despise it... that's an absurb extreme materalistic thought, it's really a shame.... -
