Four-year-old girl falls to death from flat
By Tracy Sua
A GRANDMOTHER'S short trip out of her 11th-storey flat ended in tragedy when she returned to find her four-year-old granddaughter lying dead at the bottom of her block on Wednesday morning.
The woman, whom neighbours say is in her 70s, cried hysterically as she clutched her granddaughter at the bottom of Block 148 in Simei Street 1 where she lived.
A neighbour quoting the child's aunt said the window grilles in the flat were not locked. She said the child was sleeping when the grandmother left to buy coffee and the maid was also not around. The girl might have fallen when she looked out the window to look for her grandmother when she woke up.
Police took away a black stool that is believed to have been related to the fall.
Paramedics pronounced the girl dead at 8.30am and police have classified the case as unnatural death.
It is understood that the girl stayed with her grandmother as she attended a nursery school in a nearby block while her parents lived in Pasir Ris.
The Shin Min and Lianhe Wanbao newspapers reported that the girl's parents rushed to the scene with another six-year-old child, whom neighbours said was the girl's sister.
