  you could have deactivated the picture thing... Opera allows you to not load up pictures to speed up pages where you want only the text...
  
  i'm using opera... check your top left corner, there should be a little picture of a camera beside the lock... click on it until the full camera appears, then refresh the page

  then it could have been turned into a text only button.. does anything there say "Show Images" instead?
  
  if so, right click and choose "images only" then click it until it's a full camera

  I'm experiencing the same problems.. It takes a long time to reply if I want to quote another poster and the emoticons are coming out as words, like 'laughing'.
  I'm using Firefox by the way.
