what is vertigo173?

  ok i downloaded this movie called jiang hu.. and then when i tried opening it.. i couldnt open it with divx, real, windows media, quicktime, or any other player.. and then i checked the file extension.. it said vertigo173. and then i was wondering, is there such a file extension? it looked and sounded more like a person's nickname than anything else.. so i googled this and as i thought, nothing related to file types. i was wondering which extension would be the best to change to so that i can watch this movie file

  if its 700++mb, give it a *.avi extension, if its 300-400++, give it a *.rmvb extension.

  ok thanks.. if it still does not work? then is the file corrupted? or is there another problem?

  oh wow, that's easy, add ".avi" behind it. If it doesn't work, chances are, I'm already zzzzzzz.....

  Downloaded one such file before.
  
  Below were the instructions (not sure if they would work for yours):
  
  1. Change the .vertigo173 file extension to .zip.
  2. Extract the .zip file to get .rar file.
  3. Change the .rar file extension to .avi

  OMG.. IT WORKED.. WOOHOO.. thanks alot =D .. btw another question.. how do i input fansubs into a movie file. when i downloaded the movie, the subs and the movie file itself were in different folders.

  Put the softsub (*.srt) and movie (*.avi) file in the same folder.
  Make sure the filenames are exactly the same before playing.

  hmm weird.. it still doesnt work.. in the subs file.. there are 2 files.. one is 7,600 kb and another is 92 kb.. and extensions .sub and .idx respectively

  You'd have to convert .sub file (binary) to .srt file (ASCII) for the softsub to work.
  
  The only reliable freeware I know of is Vobsub.
  
  1. After installation of Vobsub, launch SubResync.
  2. Open the *.sub file.
  3. Select your language option, then save as *.srt file.
  4. You may have to enter matching letter(s) for subtitle text.
