Migrant revisitng Sg after 10 years give views

After I immigrated to Canada in 1991 I immediately renounced my Sickgapore "bandage" ...citizenship I was obviously not a citizen of Canada yet. At the time Sillypore allowed us to renounce the bondage without having to prove that we are citizen of another country.
I took out all my CPF to buy my bangulow in Edmonton...there was no admin charges ..or may be a few $ of fee to pay...I can't remember.
Later when my mother suddenly died of stroke in Sickgapore, I was indeed "stateless" and it took me almost 10 days to get a "certificate of identity" from Canada to allow me to travel under a special pass only to Singapore...not even allowed to transit via USA.
But let me tell you.: "It was worth the risk!" The freedom from bondage was and is sweater than the inconvience of being a stateless.
Last week I just returned from Singapore. After an absence of almost 10 years from Singapore this recent visit opened my eyes and convinced me that I made the right choice to immigrate to Canada.
All the taxi drivers (about 10) who drove us complained that life is tough in Leegapore. Even the toilet attendent we met in a building in Orchard Rd. complained. Ten yrs ago my group of S'porean friends asked me "why I need to immigrate?" Now the same group I met again, told me that I made the right decision to leave Sillypore. Many of them after being laid off started their engineering cos. They have to go to Malaysia,Vitnam to search for business. there is none in Sinkgapore. They told me they try to remain small to be out of the Temasick radar screen....thus need not have to compete in tendering with the Mdm Ho's group.
The heat alone in Sickgapore is enough to drive me and my wife mad. We lost all our appitite to eat and did not even want to move around. It just suck our energy out. We visited Jurong Bird Park and the Hap Par villa..it melted us. My daughter age 17 refused to walk ...too hot for her. But funny enough my Canadian-born son, age 9 seemed to enjoy the heat. He was running like a rabbit.
In Canada...city of Edmonton our temp is from 25 (day) to 16 degrees (night)...just in Genting Highland....we lost it. -
according to astrology, not everyone is suitable to migrate or become own boss.
some will have better, some have worse fortunes if they do....it's all destined. -
That person never emphasizes his/her inability to be with his/her mom while she passed away.
That surprises me.
Come to think about it, there is nothing can make him/her miss Singapore, if that is the case. No surprise this time. -

Heard that it is also hard now in Canada to find jobs?
Read that somewhere about Canada losing its attraction as the place to immigrate to due to its economy slowing down and unable to compete....
Guess everywhere is the same.....
P.S: If you've been in Canada for 10 years, of course you cannot tahan the heat in Singapore. Similarly, those in Singapore will find it hard to adapt to the temperate climate in Canada. Not a good reason why must leave Singapore..... -

I feel sorry for Singaporeans who still believe all that "quitter" crap. Can't you see that it is a ploy by PAP to make people stay and rot in the Republic while they are stuffing their coffers with taxpayer's money? SM Goh, who made the comment during one of his national day speeches, has a daughter who is conveniently living in the UK. So much for being a "quitter". When trouble hits, do you think the ruling elite will stay and fight? They'll be on the first flight out and flying to their beautiful bungalow on the shores of the Mediterranean funded by GIC.
Singaporeans can label all they want. Yes, I am a quitter, and proud of it! The grass IS greener on the other side! For those of you enlightened and bold enough to leave Singapore...I salute you. Oh wait, I don't have to, coz I don't have anymore reservist to do! LOL! -
frankly i dont believe in the fighter/quitter crap.
everybody has to think for themselves. when you are down nobody, especially the government, will do anything to help you.
if one is unhappy and migration is a solution, then, leave. otherwise seek an alternative. those without an option, lan lan, like myself!!!
it is silly to sit here and rot if you can be better elsewhere.
i agree with weirdo80 that in event of a major catastrophe (beyond salvation) the rich and powerful will flee immediately. they have the means!! -

true.. but i thought if you wanted to migrate somewhere else for work you need to have quite alot of money before they accept you into the country.. especially countries like japan/canada/usa etc.. i know that if you are sent to another country by companies.. you dont really have to pay for much.. just daily expenses and etc.. house.. children's education.. and sometimes even transport is paid by the company eh? please correct me if im wrongOriginally posted by dragg:if one is rich enough why leave singapore? this is an ideal place for the rich. -

there is nothing wrong with a person disliking his country of birth and wanting to move abroad to another. The world is no more Singapore or Canada, we depend on one another to survive. Every nation in the world today consist of ppl from many different nations. That is true for Cananda, it is also true for Singapore. Quitter or not is really no big deal, it's how you want to view it and how the politicians want to influence you to stay and make a difference. In the next 10 yrs, many more Singaporeans will leave and many more foreigners will come to take root here.
Freedom is about the right to choose. We shouldn't put down those who leave Singapore for greener pastures overseas... have you ever blamed your great grand parents who came to Singapore in search of a better life from China or India? Do you think your great grandparents who came here for a better life are quitters of China?
It is only human nature to seek for a better place to live, a better place where he/she could survive with his/her skills. And Singapore may not be the place for everyone. Just like other countries may not be the place for every Singaporeans. -

Now would someone please tell the ICA that we need to be more discerning in the migrants that we welcome?This is not 1819 anymore, we have the choice to be selective, and it should never be misconstrued as discrimination.
Migrants have to prove they can bring something substantial here, not just the ability to spit on the road and huddle in a 3-room flat without any real contribution to the economy and instead becoming unwanted alternatives which devalue the education and wages of those of us who are born here and have to support families on Singaporean terms, not on some foreign terms where the currency is much lower.
Dammit, policymakers these days..too one-dimensional and often leave out the consequences their legislation has on the other ends. -

I agree with weirdo and dragg that the word quitter shouldn't apply to Singaporeans who migrated overseas. It is just their choice to do so. In fact using that word disgraced all our forefathers who migrated from India or China. Just like peanuts was quoted by Mrs. GCT, quitters was quoted by Mr. GCT. Now I think more are beginning to understand the minds of our politicians.
The author is right that taxi drivers are complaining about life in Singapore. Just ask one when you ride a taxi next time. It is a fact that Singapore is no longer an ideal place to live. Of course life may not necessary be greener in other countries. I guess it is how much sacrifice you can accept and how well you can adapt.
Those who want to stay, just stay and those who want to leave, just leave. It is really a matter of personal choice. Please quit labelling those who want to leave as "quitters"!
Just in case anyone is thinking of migrating to Edmonton, Canada, the winter can be as cold as -17°C. -

Canada has a long long coast line so its nothing great that Singapore has a sea. As for the real cold winter, yeah, it is a sacrifice but at least the family can be together to share the joy of winter.
What is your definiting of "nothing to do"? No discos? No shopping centres?
