Jobs problems - changing jobs, careers

A summary of my interpretation and understanding about jobs, based on my and friends' experiences, newspapers (esp these 2 days Today) and TV:
1. Never change job unless you have a new job secured (signed). True as gold rule.
2. If you are above 30, forget about changing careers unless you don't mind being a taxi driver, security guard or cleaner.
3. If you are above 35, pray hard every day that you will not be retrenched.
4. Never ever be loyal to your employer. NEVER. 10 % of your time should be spent on a constant lookout for new jobs. 40% on handling office politics and 50% on real work.
5. Fuck it with the bullshit that temp and contract jobs are good for you. Most HR are myopic. They don't consider anything less than 1 year as real job experience but they will consider 3 contract jobs in 2 years as job hopping. If die die must do contract job, do not go for those less than 1 year.
6. If you are planning to migrate, please plan your career very carefully. Not all skills are needed by foreign countries.
7. Avoid working for SMEs at all cost. Any companies that are Sesdaq listed and smaller are SMEs. They have pathetic pay and benefits and almost no career path. If you are in one now, you must remember rule 4 at all time.

true for point 3...u need new skills, esp IT skills to have more chances to take up jobs, or be a entreprenuer

Touchwood, but if you fail and you need to go back to employment, do you think it sounds positive to the HR that you are a failed entrepreneur? First they will think you are a failure. Second, they are scared that you will leave the company and become an entrepreneur again and worse be their competitor. One way out is not to put down your time as an entrepreneur. But it can be very difficult to explain why you are not working during that period esp if it is 6 months or more. -

In fact, taking assessed and reasonable risk is part of enterpreneurship too.
People who are looking for so-called 1000% profitable idea won't become enterpreneur eventually.
My 2 cents.
However, I do agree with your latter part - quite hard to explain to future employer. -

In Singapore there is no way back for most failed entreprenuers unless their family is rich. Sad case. -

By the way, thanks for bringing up a good summary of your thought in this forum. A sincere writing, that is important.
I found that most of the topics are shallow and of instant noodle type - lack of sincerity. Of course, I sometime post such kind of crappy topics because only those kind of topics can attract many more eyeballs and create popularity in this forum.

hmm.... I guess people just want to lighten their day through forum than to get more stressed by the forum by discussing hard topics.
Looking at the way ppl drive in Sg and overseas... people here just keep adding stress to themselves and then expelling it to everyone around them... its very unfortunate -

As long as your contract is project based, you are in good shape.
nowadays, there are no job security. Just find a good money contract job and grab it.
My friend is a contractor for SAP(IT). He earns big money and he told me his IT friends are doing well than thoese people who have permanent jobs and got retrenced. -

Is your fren single or married with kids and car and house loan ? Read the contract terms carefully. For my company contractors they are getting more pay but they lose out on benefits like paternity marriage MC dental leave etc.... Contract with more money is good for people who forgo benefits but not so ideal for family man who has other concerns besides work related matters. So I guess it is a trade off. Sometimes contract based can means travelling ard and for some family man it can be quite hard to arrange cuz of family commitments.
Conclusion: Contract works best for single who want more money but it is not good for family man who has other concerns -
I thot SAP is over the hill liao... I know it was hot in the early 2000s... SAP specialist used to make 7 to 8 K per month ... not anymore 2 to 3 K is considered good nowaday

if succeed , a lot of people will know at your door. the gov will be the first idiot to praise you and how they create an environment fro entre to be successful.
only if you succeed. whatever it is , the entre is really alone all the way. -
