As shown above, the concentric circles and triangles reveal an intricate pattern of areas where the view's attention is drawn to. According to this analysis (found on www.vermeersriddlerevealed.com/ mona_lisa.shtml) The lines intersecting the mouth draw the greatest amount of attention, followed by the forehead and the eyes then the rest of the painting. -

This also brings back all the things Dan Brown talked about in his book 'Da Vinci's Code'.
Dan Brown said that Mona Lisa could be a fusion of both a man and a woman (androgyny..?? i think that's how you spell it) because the face structure and features are very similar to Da Vinci's own face while the overall appearance is of a women. Also, the name "Mona Lisa" was derived from Amon and L'Isis - Egyptian God and Goddess of fertility. Both of these therefore, suggest that the painting represents the unity of male and female - the great belief of pagan religions (religions before Christianity). Christianity demoted femininity and rejected the pagan religion very much back in Da Vinci's generation, and so he created it in disguise of a portrait of a normal typical women to express his true pagan beliefs, and thus explains why Mona Lisa has a faint secretive smile on her face.
And this Star of David that i've just shown is also a symbol of male and female unison. Don't really remember the specifics though; I read the book a long time ago. -
