I think that 'Tamil music' (possibly of the kind which the threadstarter was referring to) is generally believed to comprise 'Tamil pop songs'.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
It is unfortunate that most people have come to exclusively identify Tamil pop tunes with Tamil music; because the 1 or 2 songs that a friend of mine has allowed me on one occasion to listen to (even though of course I didn't understand any of the words) were truly haunting melodies, and they dealt with (so I was told) really important themes.
The same friend on a different occasion let me listen to a Christian hymn in Tamil whose title, when translated into English, would have been something like 'All I have and am is Christ's'; I must say that the poignancy of this hymn's melody really struck a deep chord with me.

Traditional classical indian music is dying. Nowadays it is pop,fusion, reggae by AR Rahman, Harris Jeyaraj and others which rule the roost. But u can still find Indian classical music in these new tunes. Here's why: AR Rahman does it occasianaly for low budget movies with a rural theme. But there's a catch. They sound like synthesized classical music. I think yr friend lent u a 1997 ARR composed film sountrack. If they are thematic, they could be ARR soundtracks. There is a haunting Christian hyme which he did in that soundtrack. Is is this
