Imagine 10 to 20 years down the future, The internet had advanced to a level where information can be found in every nook, corner, stone, wall.
The internet could become more like radio waves where u just have to use a device to tune in to use it. Already wireless internet has gone mainstream. There may not even be a need for IP addresses. It will be in the very air u beathe in. So how are they going to wipe out piracy. Anone could just rip a CD and transmit it over the air for others to pick up aka download. Food for thought -

IN the wake of the US Supreme Court's decision against peer-to-peer (P2P) applications from Grokster and StreamCast Networks, file-sharing networks are going deep into the darkest recesses of cyberspace to avoid prying eyes.
Recently, cyber-activists from the Freenet Project, a movement to create a totally anonymous file-sharing network, announced on their website that they were looking for savvy programmers to test a 'refined version' of their 'darknet' software.
Darknets are underground file-sharing networks that use software to hide their activities from outsiders like the authorities.
Unlike regular P2P networks where anyone can join if they download the file-sharing software, darknets are a by-invitation-only file-sharing community - those who want to share files on darknets must be invited by a member. ... -
What is Freenet?
Freenet is free software which lets you publish and obtain information on the Internet without fear of censorship. To achieve this freedom, the network is entirely decentralized and publishers and consumers of information are anonymous. Without anonymity there can never be true freedom of speech, and without decentralization the network will be vulnerable to attack.
Communications by Freenet nodes are encrypted and are "routed-through" other nodes to make it extremely difficult to determine who is requesting the information and what its content is.
Users contribute to the network by giving bandwidth and a portion of their hard drive (called the "data store") for storing files. Unlike other peer-to-peer file sharing networks, Freenet does not let the user control what is stored in the data store. Instead, files are kept or deleted depending on how popular they are, with the least popular being discarded to make way for newer or more popular content. Files in the data store are encrypted to reduce the likelihood of prosecution by persons wishing to censor Freenet content.
The network can be used in a number of different ways and isn't restricted to just sharing files like other peer-to-peer networks. It acts more like an Internet within an Internet. For example Freenet can be used for:
Publishing websites or 'freesites'
Communicating via message boards
Content distribution
Unlike many cutting edge projects, Freenet long ago escaped the science lab, it has been downloaded by over 2 million users since the project started, and it is used for the distribution of censored information all over the world including countries such as China and the Middle East. Ideas and concepts pioneered in Freenet have had a significant impact in the academic world. Our 2000 paper "Freenet: A Distributed Anonymous Information Storage and Retrieval System" was the most cited computer science paper of 2000 according to Citeseer, and Freenet has also inspired papers in the worlds of law and philosophy. Ian Clarke, Freenet's creator and project coordinator, was selected as one of the top 100 innovators of 2003 by MIT's Technology Review magazine. -
I'm all for technology that can overpower and destroy any firewall the PRCs want to use to censor the Net from their citizens.

Anyway, my 2nd 80GB HDD which was meant for backup is now full of downloaded game ISO files, and I need a third HDD to continue archiving everything.
Piracy is not completely harmful to the software industry. Having piracy makes software vendors to think twice about offering their software for $300 apiece. I know that Adobe and Micro$oft do that, but that's just them. Look at Thailand. The motivation of fighting piracy was the reason why their software is so damn dirt cheap now. You now hear of HWZ people organising mass imports from Thailand when a new game comes out. -

the business model has to change. the current way of doing business is no longer working.
sell cheap in volume, let a song be 10 cents + easy payment + easy access. Then people will buy it without second think.

about your second part - read the fine print carefully. sometime is not ok to get software from one place to another place using import.
buying for personal use should be ok. but it is not considered import liao -

Don't be crazy lah. You must at least give some credit to the people who wrote the songs, sang the songs, produce the songs etc. These people don't do it voluntarily ok. It is their livelihood.
