I got a D-link router and trying to set up... Anyone can advise how to set security password for logging in? I understand any user in the vincinity can logged in and that would slow down the speed. I tried calling the D-link office but no one answer... Please help ..

Just set only the MAC address of your wireless card can connect to router?

I also bought the same model. If you look into the user guide, it should be that user friendly to setup. U need to plug the cat 5 cable from router to PC to setup. juz follow everything on the user guide, lazy quote frm guide, its quite user-friendly. -

Based on a windows enviroment, u go to Start and bring out the command prompt.
Type in "ipconfig /all" u will see the list of your current network address along with the DHCP,subnet and IP address. The MAC address is labelled as Physical Address -

Then set your router only allow your wireless card to access it. -

I think you are trying to set an encryption key for WEP right?
Look for Wireless Settings -> WEP -> Encryption Key in your setup page
and you are somewhere there.
Just key in a password, and that password will be your network id.
Other users will then need a password to use your network.
Also, give your router a name. They call it SSID.
After which, go to Control Panel -> Network Connections -> Your Connection ->
Properties -> Configure -> Advanced
Here you will see a SSID field and fill in the EXACT name of your router.
Refer to your manual always. It provides the best instruction. Then ask what you don't understand in the manual. -
Thank for the help. I did all that you mentioned. Do I need to re-start the computer for the effect to take palce. You mentioned all can be found in the manual, well, err.... I can't find them. MAybe it is another book where I do not have it, for some reasons....Originally posted by starviewer:Hi,

Yes, you need to restart your router for the setting to update.
