if you don't want to be called a pirate, a theft, then go for Linux. Since it is free and you can use it legally.
but i don't think most home users care about it.

AFAIK in my Uni days Linux was pretty much the rage and it was FREE! But in those days the installation of the OS was pretty much console based and it provides minimal GUI support which is hard to gather interest of normal home users already accustomed to click and drag n drop concept. In short, it was like a developer OS instead of a home user OS.
But now 10 yrs later I guess Linux has moved on to be on par to M$ Windows. But last I heard some company do sell commercial Linux OS with their own proprietary extension? Mandrake? Redhat? are some of the companies behind Linux selling?

Red Hat, Mandrake, Suse all come with free download. -
if U tried to download using dial-up from free server...then U will know why pirate shop got sell...even sim lim sells those packaged version for something like 30 bucks(with installation manual lar)...Originally posted by findingnewidea:why?

A free distribution of Linux for sale in pirated shops is still pirating. because part of the conditions for free distribution is such that no ones sells it for profit.
anyway, i guess those pirated editions are for the "fuller" editions of linux distribtutions.. the ones you have to pay. haha
anyway, anyone here knows how to use Xandros???? i need help. -

but you can use it freely.
anyway, i agree the 'fuller' edition might have some limitation on you (probably can't use part of them as those little parts are proprietary).
