Have you notice that they walk sideway. Why would they do that?
Is it due to their physical structure or other environmental factors?

put them in a rectangular fish tank, they can only move sideways if they wanna maintain eye contact and still get away right?

Because that's the way their legs bend. Muscles work in pairs. A muscle can only retract, or pull; to lengthen again it must relax and be pulled back by another 'antagonistic' muscle. This may lets them squeeze into holes and crevices to keep out of the way of fish with sharp teeth and larger crabs that might think the crab was a tasty meal.
