NEW beads are those etched in recent years, from less than 1000 yrs to now. Though a dzi bead that is 900+ yrs old is still considered as NEW.
ancient dzi are those etched AT LEAST 1000 yrs and up to 2000 yrs ago. -

.............the reason why NEW dzi will never look like (and will never have the same kind of energies as) ancient dzi is becos the secret formula to etch ancient dzi are lost.
also, etching techniques differs from different regions and periods within 1000 yrs ago till now.
todate, dzi beads are still being made in tibet/himalayans areas. -
