its gotta be live prawns??urm...actually..i dun dare to hold on to live prawns...plus i been to labrador...got fishes..but kinda small..the biggest i caught was leather jacket...like about 1 and 1/2 palm size..other then that...all the fishes i got very small...Originally posted by Fatum:used to be very siao about fishing when i was still in sing ... if you're just starting out you can try a few of the following places:
labrodor park - lots of big fishes there, if you're patient, try casting a live prawn on a breakaway rig from the shore on the eastern side, or if you're fishing in the day, can try berleying with bread and fishing with dough for mullet, rabbitfish and halfbeaks, use very small hooks, but a big mullet on 4lb line can give you quite a wonderful fight (taste good too)
southern islands - a problem is that the ferry services are damm bad, you'd only get a few hours in ... arrange a boatman if you can, sister island's infested with small groupers, as is kusu island, to the right side of the jetty, on the inside bay you can sometimes sight fish for small seabass with free-lined live prawns, or use a tough bait like a whole small squid to withstand the pickers before something bigger comes alone ... i've caught sizeable red coral trout there before, and big sweetlips you can forget about pulau hantu, because a lot of recreational divers go there the corals are basically demolished, i was last back home in may and went there for a dive, the reefs looked as if it's been bombed ...
pulau ubin - used to be a paradise, haven't been there for sometime, someone want to update this ? ... ketam channel used to be a good place ... and we used to cast lures around the rocky shores on the north side, after the thai temple, lots of rocky structures, and around evening and dawn on the right tides you can hear seabass chasing baitfishes all around, try a yo-zuri crystal minnow on around 40cm of soft mono-covered wire and a double, or a live prawn/fresh dead tamban combo, sea worms will get you a lot of catfishes and grunters ....

okay ... you got to attract the fishes to you, there are loads of big, even BIG fish at labrodor, my abu garcia 6500CT almost got spooled once there at dawn when something took off with my live-prawn rig (line broke), you must berley a lot, i typically buy around 6 loaves of white bread which i mash in with belachan paste, or you can substitute with those kind of fish oils in tackle shops, but that'll be expensive, if you're not inclined to using live prawns, you can try snap frozen dead ones, peeled, or sliced kembong or tamban pieces, try a float, it'll save you a lot of money on rigs, if there are lots of small fishes change to something tougher like squid. split shot the leader and flip it out, no need to cast far ... you can get sweetlips, parrots, fingermark snappers, and every now and then perhaps a mirror trevally or a queenfish.Originally posted by maltopia:its gotta be live prawns??urm...actually..i dun dare to hold on to live prawns...plus i been to labrador...got fishes..but kinda small..the biggest i caught was leather jacket...like about 1 and 1/2 palm size..other then that...all the fishes i got very small...

thing is you got to be patient while shore fishing in singapore, why don't you try fresh water fishing instead ? ... you can cast lures, or fly fish, which is ideal if you don't like handling smelly baits ....
(of course, you can do your part too by releasing any undersized fishes and those that you won't eat ... let them go forth and breed eh ...)
