Parents complaining about difficult PSLE maths paper

  I like to say the following to my friends:
  
  Maths is a product of people in the 18th, 19th century who have nothing else better to do since there's really nothing much for them to do.

  Another part is to help students see the relationship between diff Maths topics. Those familiar with mathematical history will no doubt marvel at the insight in relating algebra and geometry (is this the correct term? skyfoo pls confirm). Descartes linked algebra to geometry. Fermat linked geometry (the cartesian graph) to algebra.

  sadly, that is the case for now. ya, geometry is the correct term. not sure if the teaching of maths knowledge helps now as many irk maths due to "teach more learn more"

  Most likely the answer is 83s, as some of you have got. Reasoning should be correct too. If use algebra, will get 3 unknowns in 2 simultaneous equations. But follow on with elimination method will get 83s.

  A man went down a flight of stairs by walking a few steps and running 14 steps, taking a total of 41s. He repeated this by walking a few steps and running 6 steps, taking 65s to do so. What would be time taken if he only walked down the flight of stairs?

  If the "few steps" are not the same, then I think it is impossible to pin down an answer.
  
  isn't 83s the time taken to complete all the steps by walking??
