My lecturer once told me that the diploma youve obtained in Poly is probably not related to the job you will be doing in the future. How true is that?

not only diploma mah..
u can have honors degree in so and so but u go work in a really not related industry. My lecturer is one example. -

Actually it applies to any Educational Level. I'm also a Advance Diploma Business Student. It really makes no different for me while i'm doing business myself now~ haha

Poly is only a stepping stone
if u reallie want to put to use wat u learn
u must constantly upgrade urself
like for example my electronics course
it is a must to take degree in the near future -
at least it's true for me....

After working for years I think not only that... poly or Uni should have a opick politik course prepared for students to step out and work. For ppl who are slow to adapt, they will be so disillusioned with how the workplace differs from wat is taught in schools hahaha....
Slow adapters find themselves change job very often. I am a classic example. I change 4 jobs in 3 years and I have seen thru it all (see broke red dust) it is everywhere..... play the game play the game to survive hehehe.... now this job I stay > 4 years liao. Why? Cuz everywhere sama sama

wats more impt are the soft skills and life skills that u acquired during ur schooling yrs tt will bring u far in life....
there are ppl who study for rice bowl
there are ppl who study for interest
there are ppl who study for the sake of studying.....getting over and done with...
tan pin pin took law and came back to be a documentary film-maker.....
selena tan quit being a lawyer and went into theater and tv.... -
What is the purpose of studying?
Preschool:To gain language, analytical and thinking skills. These are the most important things.
Tertiary: To hone all your mind skills further and to learn a skill to suvive in economy.
Higher tertiary: To make bucks. -

communication skills
interpersonal relationship
personal development
yada yada...... -
What you study in poly is always the "ideal" scenerio.
Things get provided for you, and it's too "happy flow".
What you learnt in jobs are the "reaL' things, the real un-ideal world and situation that you'll never be faced with when in studies.
What your lect might meant is that the things u are learning now might not be of much use to you when you work next time. -

for students who always proud of your academic achievement, it's time to reflect and work on your interpersonal skills. -
yup~ What we learnt in school are usually in a form of 'ideal' world. But, ppl who are really smart (not referring to only academically), can really apply what he/she learnt in school. That's why there are ppl who can climb up the stairs so quickly~

though the govt try to inject things like "creativity", more project work, less exams.....but everything is still restricted and controlled.....
and there is always this debate......
the book-smart vs street-smart......who can survive in the real world better? -

Creativity can nver be produced by implementing it in sec schs like last time. But the more recent ones like those in nusery, kindergarden and primary sch maybe could be more effective.
But as far as concern... no matter how creative student is... the poly/JC students can usually not use their creativity knowledge learnt in school to apply to the real world~
