Born in Austin in 1954, bright-eyed Eric Johnson emerged on the music scene in the late 1960s with a group called Mariani. The band released a psychedelic record with a limited run of 100 copies. Today, a single copy can fetch up to $3,000 from devoted Johnson fans.
At 16, Eric had already recorded mature blues licks, well before he gained world-wide recognition. And by 1974, he hitched a ride with the Electromagnets pumping out riffs with his Gibson Les Paul along the lines of Hendrix and Clapton until the group broke up three years later.
His genius was fully expressed in his breakthrough album Ah Via Musicom (1990). Guitarists rejoice in the superb tune “Trademark” and his Grammy award winning instrumental “Cliffs of Dover” and get some kicks out of Eric singing on a couple of tracks including a sweetly plaintive, “Desert Rose.”
Ranked as Guitar Player magazineÂ’s Best Overall Player five times in a row and the Austin ChronicleÂ’s Guitar Player of the Decade in 2000, in April, 2005, Johnson walked off the Austin Music Awards stage with the following:the Austin Musician of the Year Award; Best Electric Guitarist Award; and, Best Acoustic Guitarist Award.
Eric has more colorful tone in his fingers than Van Gogh had on his palette.
