Let's face it.... no system is perfect.
The best indicators would of course be percentage body fat and percentage body muscle... but that requires specialised equipment which only advanced health and fitness centers have.
BMI is the next best thing... just bear in mind that it has its limitations. A big-boned or muscular person would, for example, naturally have a higher BMI than a slightly tubby person who's mainly fat. I have a BMI of 61/(1.7)^2 = 21.1, and I know of slightly plump people who have slightly less or equal BMI.
Just please don't be so quick to diss BMI for its limitations. Not all of us can afford those fat meters, you know.
And please don't call me an idiot for using BMI as a rough gauge of my health.
