Sometimes it could be due to the environment that you are in. The group of friends that you have. If you find yourself challenging against someone else in your daily task, you are further prone to have a lower self esteem than one who has nothing to worry about in the future, who just takes things as it is.
Stemming from the family could be another factor on how free you are to express your own self at home. If you find yourself contributing ideas and your own ideology to your parents and siblings without being "flamed", you are actually encouraged to challenge your parents heathily. This will then be brought forward when you go out and hang out with your friends.
But this may change, as your friends may not be like your parents. And if you assume that your friends are like your parents, you will most probably end up playing with yourself at one corner...

people with a YIN element as their day-master in their ba zi are more vulnerable to low self esteem, according to what I've observed so far.........
