Singaporean Rock Culture

Hey Guys/Gals,
I'm doing a study on rock culture among youths in Singapore.
In particular, I am studying how did this become a such popular trend among youths. Rock music, rock bands, jamming, performing at gigs.. etc
Anyone knows how? Did the success of Electrico start all this?
Almost everyone nowadays are forming their own rock/pop bands.
But what are the reasons behind it?
Is it because its the trend? - if yes then why?
Is it because fame and popularity will come along with the association of forming a band?
Even the press and media are getting involved.

If I'm not wrong, there are a lot more bands competitions which are up and coming

come down n get yr fact right, the rock music was even more popular during the 80s to 90s....Not that now it got popular...Your study is a big failure u dont even know the timeline...

I'm studying rock in singapore, not about rock in general. So its not the timeline but the location I'm concerned about.

I know alot of Singaporeans listen to Jrock like Dir En Grey and L'arc-en-ciel.

I can tell u for sure, the teens in singapore are not inspired by any local acts to form a band, is confirm a foreign influence

i dink. we shld look at the point of view in their songs. do we feel the song,
lets try nt to go ard saying that nw a daes rock band suxs n kinda stuff. cos i dink they also put in a lot of effort in composing and producing their songs.
all hav their blood and sweats in it. its a bit unfair going ard saying that they are sissy and kinda stuff.
maybe they r jus nt tat gd enf yet. or they really belong to the gender. giv each other time to learn and grow. however, when they perform they can bring out the real feel in the song and interact with the audience its already a big achievement, cos its nt easy.
rock to me is more abt passion and feel.
i feel that its really encouragable for teens to start with their own band and kinda stuff. it brings more meaninng into their live once they noe wat they are searching for.
lets make singapore a musicial country too!

I have to say the observatory is a good rock band, and yes electrico and pug jelly probably revive the rock scene in singapore and the success of concert by the bay also

I have been involved in the rock culture in SG ever since i was in P6
I was in a local rock group, Acid9, and the only exposure we had was local jamming gigs at Sunset Bay and the Loft.
Rock in SG, presumably, started with the local MAT ROCK bands like Sweet Charity and Lefthanded. They started the long, frizzy hair in the 70s ala the mullet in the western region.
Lasted from 70s to 80s, mellow rock bands such as the Bambinos and the Crescendos followed the success of their counterparts in the west , The Drifters, Budy Holly.
Then during the late 80s and early 90s, came the revival of Pseudo "Hair Rock" thanks to Douglas O and his band, Energy. Tania followed quite soon. They are the LIVE BANDS type that paved the way for current LIVE BANDS in clubs such as the-now-defunct Europa.
Then, came the pioneer of Heavy Metal in SG with the birth of Axed Ministers. They are indeed the pioneers. Carved out a niche in Japan and now, they are covering gigs in Japan. -
Master-_-, what was the driving force behind what type of rock culture was in and what was not? How did those rock cultures eventually got phased out leaving us with the present rock culture we now see commonly?

But that's what rock is; an outlet to vent our frustrations.
The press and media are slow to catch on that punk/rock/metal/emo has been actually a staple amongst us teens.
Although there are no household local rock bands (if got name me one can? Ronin is read newspaper den know one), I have been to some performances held at the Esplanade(on saturday and sunday evenings if i remember), and I have to say that local talent is not lacking.
However, there is this big problem: local rock scene has a lack of exposure by the media. There are countless gigs and concerts going on at any time of the year, but usually only acquaintances or "people who are in the know" attend them.The media is too caught up selling Singapore to the world to focus on this.
I myself have formed a band, but its right now in limbo because of financial problems. Having said that, the feeling of writing and playing your own songs are pretty enjoyable.
