the reason you cannot eat before op, it is because during operation, the food u eat might regurgitate and it might end up in ur lungs and u can get pneumonia

Aspiration Pneumonia based on Anaesthesia...
When undergoing surgery, you will be given general anaesthesia - sending you to sleep, and hence rendering temporary unconsciousness... when unconscious, you will not be able swallow your own saliva or even to cough, since all your reflexes will be dampen by the anaesthetic agent.
This will lead to acidic components and food from the stomach to regurgitate and get dislodged into the lungs leading to a condition called Aspiration Pneumonia.
For emergency surgery, the patient will be given a medication to clear the stomach content (metoclopromide) and rush the food into the bowels. If it is a bowel surgery, a on-the-table toilet cleaning will be done where the feces will be flushed from one end to the other. -

Cisapride - same family with metoclopramide (Propulsid)
Metoclopramide Oral (Clopra, Maxolon, Octamide, Reclomide, Reglan Oral)
The name in bold is commonly what it is known as in Malaysia... -
