hi! for those who tried solving my question about A, B and C and the red hats, i can only tell you all the answer next tuesday. gomen gomen!
but for the moment, you all can try this. i got the answer for this.
this question is much more difficult and requires A LOT of thinking.
just a little background of this question...
urm. this is the "Smith-Jones-Robinson" problem devised by the English puzzle expert Henry Dudeney.
very very difficult to understand!!!! i'm typing word for word from the question paper, and adding in other notes so that you all wouldn't be as confused as me when i first read it.
i have a feeling most ppl would give up just by reading this question. coz i also wanted to give up just now. hahaa.
Smith, Jones and Robinson are the engineer, brakeman and fireman on a train, but not necessarily in that order.
Riding the train are three passengers with the same three surnames, Mr Smith, Mr Jones and Mr Robinson.
(which means there are 6 ppl altogether in this question!)
some clues.
1) Mr Robinson lives in LA.
2) the brakeman lives in Omaha.
3) Mr jones long ago forgot all the algebra he learned in high school.
4) the passenger whose name is the same as the brakeman's lives in Chicago.
5) The brakeman and one of the passengers, a distinguished mathematical physicist, attend the same church.
6) Smith beat the fireman at billiards.
Question: Who is the engineer?
(it's also possible to derive who is the brakeman and the fireman. haha.)
Note: this is to help you all understand the situation a little more.
the engineer, brakeman and fireman's names should only be Smith, Jones or Robinson.
Mr Smith, Mr Jones, and Mr Robinson are the passengers.
