The satelite is currently down, they sent a few chinamen up there to get it fixed asap. Let's all wait for good news.

If you read google earth's FAQ, you'll get your answer to your query. Or better still, go see if Nicoll highway is fixed.

Images of western parts of SIngapore, are blurred out for security reasons.
There's an army camp there, live training grounds, and Tengah Airbase.
That's why it's blurred out. -

How about, *Shock* *Horror*, Google Earth is Free and as such, they did not go to the expense of getting high-res pics for every single place on earth? -

If all of Singapore is visible via Google Earth, can you imagine WHO will be able to study Singapore carefully?
Google although very successful still needs clearance from each and every country before launching this service.
We are small, we need to cover up sensitive areas. -

Big Brother, USA, is probably not worried.
In the first place, it's near impossible to get close to any of their protected areas. But it's embarrasing thinking of 911.... -

I do not think googld got 'clearance' from each and every country. Let's look, for example, at Iraq. If there is any place on earth now that ought not to be included in google earth Iraq is it. Yet the images of baghdad are actually quite high res.
I know why those images are high res. It is because google earth uses much of the technology used in Keyhole. Keyhole was a coy that was used a lot by news coys to report events in Iraq, esp during the early stages of the war. There are high res images of Iraq because it makes commercial sense to take those pictures. Now, if we look at google earth as a whole, we see that most of the ares with high res images are those Big. recognisable cities and places. This is, i guess because it makes more commercial sense for Keyhole to take those pictures since it is likely those are the pictures people actually want to use.
In Short:
- Google Earth uses much of the Images used by Keyhole
- Keyhole is a comemrcial coy, and hence only took pictures that made commercial sense to take. -
It's a valid point with regards Keyhole, and it does make commercial sense.
However, I still believe a country's permision ought to be sought prior to airing such images. -

some of the pics are taken as far back as 3 yrs ago. Google Earth actually gathers all the pictures that are already available on the net and compiled them together. the pictures are not realtime...

Google only uses whatever map info it has over the past 3 years. If you see the maps of US using google earth, they got buildings rendered in 3D even. So who's the one afraid of security leaks? We can see the whole of paya lebar airbase, so it doesn't make much sense on the tengah part. The whole map is actually just a patchwork of available maps google can get their hands on a put together. Nicoll highway is a big hint to how old the map really is. Just go and take a look.
