Slapped at pool for being 'rude' to wife

ON THURSDAY I was at my friend's condominium, Bishan8, for a class barbecue when we had a most shocking encounter.
My friends were swimming in the pool in PE shorts and T-shirts when a security guard told us that a couple sitting on the other side of the pool had complained that we were not properly attired.
The guard said that it was not against the rules but he had to act on the complaint. Upon checking the rules, we found that we were allowed to wear our own clothes in the pool and my friends continued to swim.
The woman approached us and started yelling Hokkien vulgarities at my friends and my friend's mother. My friend told her to stop verbally abusing her mother and the woman yelled: 'You want to fight, come up and fight, lah!'
A while later, her husband went up to my friend, shoved her and slapped her on the face for being 'rude' to his wife. Mind you, this was a 15-year-old girl who was half his size.
When we yelled at him in indignation, his wife showed my other friends the middle finger.
As a 15-year-old, I am appalled at the behaviour of these adults. They portray the ugly side of Singaporeans and give Singaporeans a bad name.
I hope that we can do something to change the mindsets of such people: that they are educated and therefore are above everybody else. -
My question is why didn't she complain to security and lodge police report? -

Walau! I think these people have been storing up all their anger for a long time, and then all of a sudden, the volcano erupted and become like this... sick people

they come in here, guns in their holster, then just give a verbal warning. but u lose out because u were hurt by the slap, while they get away with the verbal warning.
so isn't it better to whack them back, then both get verbal warning? -

Incredible that someone bothers to write to the national newspaper for a minor dispute.
Next time, I slip on a banana skin in Orchard Road, I'll write a 3,000 words essay to ST forum complaining about the state of cleanliness in Orchard Road, the ineptness of Singaporeans littering, the inability of our sweepers to sweep up the banana skin and also government agencies such as the National Enviroment Agency for not putting enough dustbins around Orchard Road at strategic locations and then finally ending with a few paragraphs about how littering in Orchard Road damages the reputation of Singapore as a "green and fine city", thus endangering our international reputation as a host for all sorts of world class conventions and meets etc.

shrugs i don't know what you think, but a minor dispute is just name callings and verbal assault. when it turns into physical assault, its no longer a minor dispute and can be charged if proven guilty.
take the last singapore election for example. Dr chee was verbally assaulting Mr goh. and he was screwed for it. do you think it is a minor dispute if he went up there and slapped mr goh? use ur brain dude -

Beside, I don't understand what the letter writer hopes to achieve by writting to ST forum. Correcting social inequality and justice. Forget it.
How about going outside, away from your comp and tell someone that they are dumb instead?

as if you yourself would be dumb enough to just let someone slap you and hurl abuses at you without defending yourself or taking actions against it.
as for the kid writing to the forums, that's her way of taking action and defending herself, and besides its a way to create self awareness. like now because she raised this issue, we are here discussing about it. and we're not the only ones discussing about it.. ministers who read this will be thinking about it.
it may not be a conclusion, but its a start. -
I wonder...the letter didn't seem to say what the security guard did. Shouldn't it be part of his job to intervene in such circumstances?
Anyway, that man was really too much alright. Perhaps someone would take his picture and post it online to name and shame. -
depends on the guard's character. if he believes what is right, he would intervene.
but if he's a snivelling twit, he'd mind his own business. -

well no matter if it is a minor dispute or a major one.
Final conclusion (even if it is just mine) is that it is pretty useless.People here may discuss it,minister may do so too,but in the end what do we have? I doubt people here can do much,so ministers? Another campaign to "educate" the adults?
Such campaigns are not unknown for its failure over the years
