Why must St Michaels be renamed SJI Junior?

FROM next year, St Michael's School may be renamed St Joseph's Institution (SJI) Junior (Essex Road Campus), if the Ministry of Education approves.
The 51-year-old primary school and the 153-year-old SJI have long been in the same extended family, under the Lasallian religious order. But plans such as the name change are afoot to thicken the blood ties.
SJI wants to tap a ready stream of talented younger pupils in the Josephian Talent scheme, which will be available to pupils selected to join SJI Junior. And it is not just about talent in academic subjects, but also in sports, the arts and more.
With the changing education landscape and top schools pulling ahead, the move is an important one for SJI.

"SJI Junior will give us an added dimension because we can track the boys over the years. It won't just be exam-based admissions," Mr Noel Hon, chairman of the SJI Board of Governors, told Today.

"The PSLE will still be the main criterion but we'll also be able to understand the boys' different strengths."

SJI also aims to increase the number of boys from affiliated schools or children of alumni. De La Salle, St Anthony's Primary and St Stephen's are the other Lasallian primary schools.
And while the successful practices of the new scheme will be shared with the trio, St Michael's is the chosen one due to its close history with SJI — it merged with the old SJI Junior.

WTF? Why must they change name? I fail to see a link how changing sch names can increase the quality of the student going into SJI. I appeal to all Ex michaelians to protest the decision made by the SJI BoG.

But there is no need to change the school name. It makes it sound like those goin St Michaels will be destined to enter SJI. St Michaels is unique becuase the name itself is unique. At least names like:
SJI (Road name)
SJI Independent
sounds better. SJI Jr sounds like a name primary school kids study in.

the education system is singapore is changing greatly... as a former josephian, I think it's great that SJI is keeping up with the competition.
Changing the name of St mike is just a branding exercise, nothing new... sure some are going to oppose it, but as long as it improves the quality of it's education system, changing it's name is just a small price to pay. -

Anyway, St Stephen's school in Siglap is also under the same family, isn't it?
By the way, is there a St Patrick's Primary school? I only know about the secondary school. -

But Sony provides brand responsibility. So, now people will trust this Sony-labelled Enzer products more.

i dun think they should change st mikes to sji junior......
but the idea is alright
hm sji merging with cj more feasible but they chose not too back in the 70's -

the supply og quality if its there then no need to change name also got the ability to improve the name and new direction mah not like they change the name then will have better staff come in.........
the other guy regarding brand trust maybe bah but sji not like very good also and then education is not about selling the skool mah -
As long as the old La Salleian values and spirit remain (especially when it comes to accomodating the less well-off students), I'm okay with it.

i agree it's true sji isn't top class like ri or chinese high, but it's a decent school with a great tradition and history, like those of ri and chinese high, and it has a strong alumni too, so there's certainly set of qualities and strong potential for the sch to build on.
in soccer terms, ri and chinese high is like manutd and chelsea, sji is like liverpool. it's not the best now, dont have the qualities to mount a challenge to those two schools, but still has a vast pool of supporters, history and decent qualities.
think about it, u can't be the best all the time.. u can try to do as well as u can. and that's what sji is doing here...
you are not wrong, it's just u are looking at it in a way that, if u are not the best or in the top flight, there's no point in working so hard to make things happen. however for a sch like sji, they want to compete, they want to move on and change with times. and there's nothing wrong about it
