Do you also on your monitor screen? Monitor screen seem to go haywire after long period of on. Best if your room is aircon. Of cuz can leave computer on but switch off the monitor

my computer automatically goes into power saving mode after a certain time. will all downloading of files stop during these period?

i live my laptop on 24-7.. hosting n sharing files... bout 2 years now..so far so good

just dun let yr computer sleep or go into hibernate mode. and set yr power options so that yr HARD DISK doesn't go to sleep...

anyway it all depends on your cooling system.
if you keep it in an air conditioned room it should be fine. for my comp, no air con...but its got like...6 fans, so its kept cool.
i still remb though...my old comp, for at least 4 dam years we had the fan put in the wrong way. we had to shut that comp down every 5 - 6 hours to let it cooldown for 15 - 30 mins before we could use it.
i still remb when we played the original sims...after awhile the game would get choppy cause the comp was overheated. we would have to take the CD out and wash it to cool it down...and after it got really bad we had to shut down the comp to rest it. -
i dont use fans at all.

most probably when u have to leave yr comp on while u r away is when u are waiting for it to complete some task or u r running a server or downloading/ uploading stuff.
generally even if u leave an OEM computer on for hours it will not overheat unless there is some problem with yr house circuitry...fear that if not one is attending to it when it causes a fire u will not be there to react or put it off on time.
disable screen saver if u have to. go to "power options" in "control panel" and make sure u select "never" to "hdd", "power standby" etc. since u r expecting hours of inactivity. u can switch off yr monitor to save power.
no worries if you are not connected to the internet while leaving yr computer on. but if it is connected online while u are sleeping or away, weird things can happen depending on what actions yr computer shall be performing.
otherwose u just have to take precaution against other users in the family or yr pets.

yah, just make sure ur hard disk is set to on, but ur monitor can switch off after 30min or go into screen saver mode.
i leave my laptop and desktop on like continuous for 2 days cuz to run simulations and jobs and its ok. but monitor i always set to off after 30min.
surprisingly from my knowledge, the GPU heats up so much faster than the CPU. Anyway if overheat, the motherboard have safety features which will automatically switch off the PC when above a designated temperature.

there r ppl running their comps 24/7 365 and no problem, there are servers with external storage arrays attached running 24/7 365 and can still be down for maintenance after switching to standy and backup units and they dun overheat nor crash...just make sure u have the right hardware, ventilation and cooling solutions in place. if u just leave yr comp on then no need much hassle. if u downloading/ uploading stuff online u can protect yr comp with servelliance or security software available in stores. if u OCing or running benchmark tests and doing "extreme" stuff to yr comp for days better have the appropriate cooling hardware in place so that wen the system breaks....only yr comp hardware gets fried and system hang but no more than that.
most of the computer and its components are made of UL (flame retard) material. they can be fried but not burn up...unless its a holocaust! the basic PCB material is already FR4! in case of a fire most likely its is a short cicuit in the system causing the PSU (or the psu itself) to catch fire.
with all these said...just take the necessary precautions... -
