hello...
how long does it take for a book to appear in the library? today, i went to Times and was interested in two books but too expensive at $50 for both.
when i got home, i did a search on the NLB website and their libraries only had earlier books by the authors. roughly, how long will it take for a new book in bookshops to appear as a loanable item in our libraries?

Quite long.
The book I have been looking has been published since early this year, but still not in library yet. -
within the year the book was published, if they buy at all.

each libraries has their own purchasers. if they are buying that particular book normally they buy within the year. thats my understanding. i have read a lot of books published in 2005.

i think few factors involved, e.g, budgets for the year, availability, likely demand, popularity of the books.

i dunno leh.. I 'signed up' for Half Blood Prince on the day it came out.. and they already had like 30 copies of it..
so yeah popularity means a lot...
U can 'suggest' them to buy a book apparently in the website. -

I remember I've seen some form somewhere in the library where you can suggest books for the library to buy. If you can't find it, then just write them an e-mail or letter, and pray that they take up your suggestion.

actually i really wonder abt the library's purchasing system
i mean.. if u check out esplanade film library
for some reason, there's a whole lot of crap horror movies in there
someone along the purchasing line must be a
lousy horror movie fan
and I'm not talking B grade cult classics like.. Return of the Slime Monster.. that's really scary when you think about people spending time/money/creativity and budget on stuff like that...
but really crap stuff.... like.. 13 ghosts. -

Do you actually you can actually request the library to book a certain book? There's a page on the NLB webby for the details of your request.You go see lor. Coz I did that before but it look 6 weeks for the book to be available on the shelves.
