I believe you are referring to the red fire ants. Those you can find deep in the jungles of some of our training areas - plenty of it everywhere and they bite really painful ok.
There are lots of stories abt fire ants, one story was these group of guys were on a exercise navigating thru the dense jungle and they decided to camp for the night.
So dinner as always was canned rations and mebbe some candy bars and chocolates bought from the small canteen, mebbe even a can of coke before bedtime.
And being as predictable as ever they dumped their sugar coated wrappers and garbage not far from where they slept. Then sometime during the night felt "pin pricks" all over the body, when they shone their torch light saw a HUGE swam of red fire ants all over the place crawling in them boots, bags and equipment. And all of them ran for their lives.

Me? I like to find their nest then just drip molten wax over the enterance
