I bought a window XP professional (original) and installed on one computer. I have another computer at home but I am wondering if I can install window XP on this computer. I heard that we can only install window XP on one computer. Is this true? Can I install window XP on more than one computer at home?

You can install on your home computer, no problem. But it will stop working after 30 days because of product activation.

that has to depend on which Windows XP type you buy. There are those for only one computer and there are those for the whole family, maybe up to 5 computers.
You should be able to find your answer behind the box or one of the manuals/cards inside it -

If you bought the OEM version, you can only install it on one PC and no where else. If you change your mobo, you can't reinstall on the new mobo.

There is a BIG difference between windows xp registration and windows xp activation.
Registration can be done either over phone or over internet. Same as Activation. The similarities stop here.
Registration is OPTIONAL. Activation is COMPULSORY, unless your copy of Win XP is provided on a so-called system restore CD from your computer manufacturer which you got free when you bought your comp, in which case it has already been activated, or unless your copy of Windows is bought under "volume licensing" agreement with microsoft (see the last paragraph).
Registration process will ask you for personal info. Activation does not, you will only need your activation code which is somewhere with your Win XP packaging.
If you don't register Win XP, your comp WILL NOT stop working after any period. If you don't activate, your comp WILL stop working after 30 days until you activate XP.
Activation makes sure that one copy of windows XP will be permanently installed on only one computer in the world. The only people who do not need to activate Win XP are companies who have signed volume licensing agreements with microsoft. They get to install XP on multiple computers using a volume license product key that tells windows to skip product activation.

If you change your PC drastically, you can re-activate... not over the Net, but you can call Microsoft Singapore, give them the original specs, CD-Key. Maybe you can mail them the receipt.. dunno now if they changed the procedure.

But now the Windows Geniune Advantage stops you if you got illegal key when you access Microsoft downloads and Windows Update.

Spent one hour, and it's activated. -

Yeah did that... my roomie had pirated XP CD. kept hanging at scandisk when trying to install on a partition formatted as NTFS. then reformat partition as FAT32, install went ok - only to find that some $#%# had stuffed a virus into the windows folder.Originally posted by cyrusv:buy pirated cd.
