British were doing a roaring trade with China before 1st opium war.
The problem was that while the trade in Chinese
exports (the produce of China) was very good, there was nothing that the British could sell back to the Chinese which the Chinese were interested in. for a while the British had to use silver for this until they almost mined their country bare of the metal. then they realised the narcotic properties of opium could make it an ideal good which the Chinese would not lose "interest" in.
