NTU hostel hikes: What is the problem?

stay at my place lor...near NTU...just one feederbus a few stops only...walk home at night wif me if u can
for those staying at east side and into the final year wif project and exams round the corner call me up i giv number by PM....ladies only...my home comfy got internet connection and computer and harddisk got many many mnay thins so u won't get bored and can have a break wif me while study during exams..... -

They shouldn't be complaining, they've not been finding lodging and studying overseas.

There's always complains about perverts lurking in female toilets. So this added security is itself worthy of the hike.
I stayed in hall 2, hall 9 and hall 11. Hall 9 and 11 are more expensive than hall 2 but obviously they are better (newer too). So no complains from me at least. But in those halls, there's no lift and I actually stayed at the top floor. So a lift would be really good.
After renovations, Hall 2 had the largest rooms and the highest bills, especially when compared to halls 8 through 11, which were designed by the same architect. The hall also had the luxury of adjoining toilets.
Hall 11 underwent a change in hall management after i left and the new management improved many things, among them, they provided a cleaning package for windows, blinds and mosquito netting during the off-peak periods FOC. They also added hot water dispensing units on every floor, changed the room tables to better ones and swapped all the shower heads to more durable types.
If people were made to pay for hikes, these would be the gestures a resident would expect. And these were done WITHOUT an increase in costs at that time.
Electronic cards vs keys wise, i still don't see the merits since keys work just fine and electronic cards are still not entirely fail-safe. A lift would indeed be welcome, but it isn't a necessity. -

There's no need to compare with universities overseas. Its a different standard of living. Plus, there'll be no end to comparing if you decide to.
I agree with BillyBong that any increment must be justified.
$240 a month for a double room??? That's like a $80 increment!
I thought they were building new rooms to accomodate the student population? And all that talk about less emphasis on ECA points and a more flexible Hostel allocation structure that gives priority to students living further away and less priority on ECA points. Now they decide to raise the fees?
I can understand why students are complaining. $80 increment is a lot of money. $240 per month, that totals up to more than 1K for a semester! Is'nt that like almost half the school fees?
So much for the condo style standard of living. That's a whole load of bull. Undergraduate hostels are no where near that standard. If you've been to one, you'll know what I'm talking about. -

haha if u been to those old neighbourhood, where the hdb is 1 room type for those old old ppl... ntu's hostel is even smaller than that. i mean my room at home is already larger than the double room in ntu...so ntu's room is really not very big lar, $240 a month... it's not like there's cable tv in every room....
im not saying the price hike is not justified...it's just that students are not convinced with the price hike.... and... being students... we are not working, any increase in prices just tighten our budget... so what is wrong with voicing our feelings... i dont stay in hall and yet i think the hall price b4 the increase is quite high, so it's very natural that ppl staying in hall are going to complain... and guess what.. it's an inelastic demand, they have to stay even if they increase the price... since u can't move out.. so must as well complain.
let me paint to u how inconveniently ntu is located...
i stay in choa chu kang... if i drive to ntu, only 15 min via the KJE. if i take public transport... 1.5 hrs including waiting time...
my neighbour who studies in nus take public transport, also around that time or less by 15 min.
and we all know ntu is so much nearer to choa chu kang than nus... and yet... it takes about the same travelling time to go to ntu from choa chu kang...
imagine ppl staying changi, bedok...majority of ppl i know who stays east stay in hall.. coz simply.. no choice! -

If they like to increase things...they should consider increasing the number of parking spaces on campus instead..
