when the shutdown dialog shows, go to Start -> Run and type "
shutdown -a" to abort the shutdown.
when you need to shutdown later, type "
shutdown -t 1".
enabling internet connection firewall seems to help with my XP, but i haven't touched it for years. gave up on windows and happily on a mac.
