Whiny Singaporeans

Alright fellas, dun get mad and flay me for this.. My ang moh fren told me this and i agreed with him..
The typical Sporean when faced with a situation that is disadvantageous to himself, first he will get angry, then complain to all his frens and colleagues or draft a complain letter if necessary.
After all the pubescent angst dies out, he just accepts the situation.
I'm saying this bcos when my school abolished the point system, increased the school fees, increased the hostel rates I've got like so many people getting angry, saying they will do this and do that..
Full of sound and fury, signifying nothing..
At the end of it, they just accepted it..
I understand that we fear the repercussions, but if an action is unjustified shdn't we come together and stand up against it?
Everyone will tell ya that they agree with ya cause but when it comes to standing against the system, ya a one man show... -

Yea, but ya look at it, when it comes to free things or some stupid fad (Eg. Bubble Tea, Dumb Hello Kitty crap), no one has any fear of anything..
I think we are only capable of complaining against those less powerful then us.. To put it bluntly, we are only bullies.. -

There is some truth in what you said, but I think it does not just apply to Singaporeans. I think there are a lot of ppl out there who just whine abt anything and everything. I must admit, that I myself am guilty of that. It's like you know there is some disparity or unfairness in a particular issue, but you know that there is really little you can do. So, the only avenue for resentment is to whine and pick on the little things that you know you'll not suffer any recriminations from. A good example is the situation in your school. People are unhappy, fees are rising. But u question yourself how many ppl are willing to stand up for it? The answers are pretty obvious. So, why should I get myself into it then? Thus, at the end of the day, ppl will just accept it.

in most places like hongkong, taiwan, korea..etc(just name few asia country), they have leader to lead them to voice out their disparity.
as for in singapore when something happen...we will 1st wait for a hopeful hero to lead them..but when someone really stand up, we clap hand and walk away. and make the kuando hero malu. -

not sure how to put it across safely, but..
WELL. for starters, there's not much freedom of speech so all we can do is whine and here there. say the wrong things at the wrong place you'll get arrested..as usual. sometimes it's better for us to just butt out. sadly restricted singapore.

Coming from his country (whichever it may be...better not be down under though) , that is run on a different set of rules and guidelines....
oh well.
Over here
1. You don't have full freedom of speech; we have freedom of responsible speech.
2. You can't demonstrate, you can only remonstrate.
3. You don't set up a neutral inquiry to investigate wrong doing...the govt does that for you.
In a nutshell...we ARE a whiny bunch. Our national past time is to complain x 3. Because there isn't much else we can do. Our avenues to manoeuvre are severly restrictive and limited. And most don't attain satisfactory results.
That's a reality bite for you. -
i disagree. its not tat we do not 1 2 do anything but when we try 2, all we get is setbacks cos we will nvr win. in states, bloggers who talk abt govt systems & stuff r "considered" heros. here, u r considered "zeros". diff culture & background. but of cos there r some sgreans who r gu niangs.

We need to change our culture and our mindest.Being whiny and the source of all that makes us whiny will destroy this nation.
You can always start by making a difference in your own way, assert yourself legally but forcefully and firmly.Give regular and hardhitting feedback. -
Your AngMo friend can resort to slapping and fist fighting in their countries and it is just "rapped on the palms" by their law. Can we do such slappng and fist fighting here without the draconic law pouncing on us?
Way back in my youth, the govt talked rugged and tough society. Now it is gentle and kinder society. Maybe that is the reason why people now whinning too much. Maybe we should allow some physical contact to build up some mental toughness in us.
