I heard it was supposed to be part of singapore, but some president or whoever guy in the history sold it to the aussies for like 10k or 100k or something... so stupid.

i heard that when singapore "owned" the island, the kids there study the same syllabus as us....same textbooks, same exams......
not sure if this is accurate.....
but the singaporeans tt stayed there since before the sale of the island were allowed to stay there and no need convert to australian citizenship? -

I believe it was sold to Australia due to administrative convenience... as Christmas Island too far away from mainland Singapore, very hard to control.
But that island can generate lots of tourist revenue, especially from Aussie visitors.. the fella who sold it to Australia really lacks foresight. -

Hmmm..I read somewhere long ago that Xmas island never belong to Singapore. Singapore was ask to take care of the island only. Later, the island is pass to Aussie. I am not sure whether it is true

actually I heard Xmas island is a nice place to visit. like a very quiet kampung, might actually intend to visit next year. But I heard you must fly to aussie and take a domestic to xmas.

gents, gents ... that was sold before we were independent ... so I guess you can say that Lim Yew Hock was a kind of british lap dog then, even though we were "self-governing" ... it certainly didn't "belong" to Singapore, but was administered by the british from Singapore because it's nearer and convinent to do so ...
i would say it's more like the brits selling off a piece of their own real estate than we selling it off to the aussies, eh ? ... -
