Worried about problem concerning a good friend

Hi, I have a problem here concerning my good friend. Hope someone can enlighten me. Thanks! =)
Recently, my good friend ran into some financial difficulties and needed cash immediately. He didn't tell me about it until now, because of pride.
Anyway, my only consolation is he didn't resort to borrowing from Ah Long San (or maybe he didn't know any). He chanced upon a Singnet advertisement online recently. Sign up for a 36mth broadband and get a laptop free. He signed up immediately with no intention of paying the monthly subscription fees and a week later, he got the laptop. He sold the laptop for $1,200. I calculated for him how much 'interest' he had to pay by signing up for the broadband service (which he doesn't need). That'll be $88/mth x 36 = $3,168. That's a 40% 'interest'!
But now, the real problem is he doesn't have the means to pay the $88/mth subscription fees as he's working as a hawker earning on $700+ per mth with a wife and 2mths old baby boy.
I want to enquire, if he doesn't pay up, how will Singtel make him pay and can they take him to court if he really refuses to pay a single cent? I hope someone who has knowledge in this area enlighten me. Thnx.

$3,186 is not a small sum... I've been 'lending' him money at least once every month on account of his baby. I need to know what are the procedures for Singtel if they can't get a person to pay. Will they really get a court summon?

he can request for pending payments for which he can pay later or else..he can pay in smaller amts of money for a longer period of time thru instalments..this can be requested and the matter can be brought up to the place where he signed up for the service...eh..laptop.

hope your fren gets out of his problem soon enough before the amount gets bigger and bigger due to interest.. -
I thought court can only issue summons to seize your property only when you're a bankrupt? $3k not say small amount also not say big amount. I know of a friend who owes them some money, not much, say less than $100. My friend has ever received a letter from Singtel threatening to take him to court but the threat never materialise.
IMHO, I think it's not really worth taking someone to court over $100 ? I mean the legal fees would cost more than the meagre sum he owes right? Is it worth it? No .... I don't think so.
I think this sorta of debt is classified as BAD DEBTS. -
Either he change job or pay little by little to Singtel.. He should have keep the laptop, he can charge his customer. Think your friend should stop doing stupid things to get himself into worst trouble.
The telecom companies can blacklist him ! next carry on like that someone will just go to court and request a freeze of his asset ! that can be done even he own people $10 ! Some joker ever did it to some big company here before as the big company play with them, they freeze the company assets like bank account that cause terrible trouble. Yep you may say your friend do not have money in the bank, but if his account & everything freeze how is his boss going to pay him .
He should seek help from town council or something and try to take up a extra a part-time job. -
i am not familiar with SG's law, but base on my understanding of America's law, they can bring him to Small Claims Tribunals.
Jurisdiction of the Small Claims Tribunals
The Tribunals have jurisdiction to hear claims not exceeding $10,000, where the claims relate to disputes arising from:
1. a contract for the sale of goods; or
2. a contract for the provision of services; or
3. tortious damage to property (but not including damage arising in connection with motor vehicle accidents)
Where the Claimant and the Respondant consent in writing, the jurisdiction can be raised to $20,000. (Memorandum of Consent)
All claims must be lodged or filed at the Small Claims Tribunals within one year from the date on which the cause of action accrued.
Bringing A Claim in the Tribunals
